Roanoker named head of state Bar examiners

ROBERT E. GLENN, a member of Glenn, Flippin, Feldmann & Darby, has been elected president of the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners, which prepares and administers the bar examination for those seeking to be licensed to practice law in Virginia. He succeeds A. HUGO BLANKINGSHIP JR. of Fairfax, who has retired from the board.

Glenn is past president of the Roanoke Bar Association and has been a member of the Board of Bar Examiners since 1982. He is a graduate of Washington and Lee Law School and has practiced in Roanoke for 35 years.

CHARITIES

\ JOSEPH M. SEIFFERT, chief of the Lynchburg Police Department, has been appointed Region 10 director of the 1993 Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Virginia Special Olympics. He will oversee local efforts in runner recruitment, fund raising and public relations. The region includes Clifton Forge, Covington, Alleghany, Rockbridge, Lexington, Buena Vista, Lynchburg, Salem, Roanoke, Bedford, Franklin, Floyd, Montgomery, Radford, Craig and Botetourt.

COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES

\ CONNIE MECK has been appointed program development specialist for Virginia Tech's Division of Continuing Education at the Roanoke Valley Graduate Center. She will be responsible for working with businesses, governmental agencies, professional associations and service organizations in developing educational programs. She was formerly coordinator of community education and volunteer services for the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind.

EMPLOYMENT

\ JERRY W. BARNETT has been named job service manager for the Covington office of the Virginia Employment Commission. He will be responsible for employment service activities in Alleghany County and the cities of Clifton Forge and Covington.

ENGINEERING

\ WILLIAM W. KING has been named an associate of Thompson & Litton, an engineering, architectural and planning firm in Wise. An employee since 1989, he has worked as a project manager for solid waste management projects and as manager of the Abingdon office. He is currently department head of project management.

FUNERAL SERVICES

\ MICHAEL M. SPESSARD, formerly office manager at Virginia Asphalt Paving Co., has been named office manager at Oakey's Funeral Service. He succeeds GRACE POFF, who held the position for eight years before being named in February to head the company's new aftercare program.

HOME HEALTH CARE

\ BRENDA BENGTSON, R.N. has been appointed director of professional and clinical services and SUSAN McDANIEL, R.N. has been named associate director at Kimberly Quality Care. Bengtson formerly worked as general manager and director of professional services for Dominion Home Health and manager of professional services at Roanoke Memorial Home Health. McDaniel was previously clinic standards coordinator assistant for Roanoke Memorial Home Health.

ORGANIZATION

\ ERNEST COPENHAVER, a cattleman from Meadowview in Washington County, has been elected to a second term as president of the Virginia Cattlemen's Association. CHARLES POTTER SR. of Lexington was elected treasurer. Also, TIM SUTPHIN of Pulaski and EDDIE NICELY of Eagle Rock were elected to the board of directors.

TRANSPORTATION

\ R. ALAN BROGAN, formerly of Roanoke, has been named president of North American Van Lines Inc., a Norfolk Southern subsidiary, with headquarters in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Brogan succeeds JOSEPH D. RUFFOLO, who will become a consultant to NAVL. Brogan will continue to serve as executive vice president-transportation logistics of Norfolk Southern Corp.

Brogan, a professional engineer with an MBA, began his career in 1964 with Norfolk and Western, a Norfolk Southern predecessor, as a research analyst, and worked in various capacities for the intermodal marketing department. He became assistant vice president-material management in 1977, and vice president of that department in 1978. He became vice president-quality management in 1991 and was elected executive vice president-transportation logistics in 1992.

UTILITIES

\ R. DAN CARSON JR., vice president of Appalachian Power Co., has been elected to a one-year term on the board of directors of American Electric Power Service Corp. The corporation is the management and technology arm of American Electric Power, the parent company of Appalachian Power.
