RADFORD HIGH SENIOR WINS TOP SCIENCE PRIZE - AGAIN
For the fourth consecutive year, Radford High School senior Ernst Kastning has taken home a top prize from the Western Virginia Regional Science Fair.Kastning's project on the "Evolution of a karstic groundwater system, Augusta Co., Va." was one of two Grand Award winners Saturday at Hollins College.
Kimberly Lowe, a Cave Spring High School senior, won the other Grand Award for a project on "Prehistoric Native American burial orientation in Southwest Virginia."
Kastning and Lowe won Roanoke College scholarships worth up to $8,000 and a year's free tuition from Virginia Western Community College. Lowe also won a scholarship from Hollins College worth up to $4,000.
Alternative Grand Award winners were Brian Burks, a ninth-grader at Northside Junior High, and James Woodson, a senior at Covington High School.
The fair is sponsored by school divisions in the counties of Alleghany, Botetourt, Franklin and Roanoke; the cities of Covington, Radford and Salem; Roanoke Valley Governor's School; and Roanoke Valley Christian Schools. Additional support is provided by Hollins College, Roanoke College, Virginia Western Community College and WDBJ (Channel 7).
