UVA BOARD OKS TUITION INCREASE
University of Virginia tuition and fees will go up 11.8 percent for state residents and 13.2 percent for non-residents under a plan approved Saturday by the school's board of visitors. The increases will raise to $4,350 the annual tuition and fees bill for Virginia residents attending the Charlottesville school. For out-of-state residents, the price will go to $12,254.
University officials, speaking at the final day of the board's meeting at Clinch Valley College, attributed the increases mainly to the state's declining share of UVa's academic budget.
The state's share of the $306 million academic budget in 1988 was 39 percent. But to meet a $2.2 billion revenue shortfall, the state in 1990 began making three years of cuts in the school's budget. The state's share of the school's $404 million budget this year is 30 percent. - Associated Press
