TECH WIN STREAK SNAPPED

George Mason scored seven runs in the fifth inning to overpower Virginia Tech 9-2 Saturday in Blacksburg, ending the Hokies' nine-game winning streak.

Tech (15-3) scored its runs in the fourth inning. Dee Dalton of Roanoke had an RBI single and catcher Josh Herman of Vinton added a sacrifice fly.

Don Anderson went 8 2/3 innings for the Patriots (11-5) to earn his third win. He struck out seven while allowing three walks.

Hokies starter Scott Crim (2-2) lost his second straight decision. He pitched four innings, yielding five hits, five earned runs and four walks.

In other college games:

\ Ferrum 14, Newport News 3: At Ferrum, Jeremy Hill was 3-for-5, scored two runs, batted in five and hit two home runs as the Panthers ripped the Ship Builders.

Andy Calohan homered, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs for Ferrum (12-3). David Jones scored a run, drove in three and homered.

\ Radford 10-4, UNC Asheville 5-6: At Asheville, N.C., Denny Van Pelt was 4-for-7 with two runs and six RBI as Radford split a doubleheader with UNC Asheville.

Robert Wilson led the Highlanders in the first game, going 4-for-4 with two runs and four runs batted in. Van Pelt was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Donnie Fields scored two runs.

Keith DiYeso and Matt Swaim led UNC Asheville in the second game. DiYeso had two hits and two RBI, and Swaim was 3-for-4 with two runs. Fields was 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI for Radford. Van Pelt had two hits and drove in three runs.

\ VMI 12, UNC Greensboro 5: At Lexington, the Keydets scored three runs in the first inning and six runs in the second on their way to the easy non-conference victory.

VMI (10-16) took an early lead in the first inning when Brian Adams walked, Louie Napoleon doubled and Warren Williams drove them home with a single. Williams scored on a ground out by David Procise.

In the second, designated hitter Merlin Ikenberry walked, David Groseclose, Adams and Napoleon singled, Williams walked and Ryan Glynn hit a bases-clearing double. Glynn scored on a sacrifice fly by John Payne.
