SALEM WINS OWN SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT
Michelle Harrison had three hits, three stolen bases and six runs batted in to lead Salem to a 13-1 championship victory over Franklin County in the Roanoke Optimist Club/Lady Spartan Invitational softball tournament, held Friday night at the Salem Civic Center and James Moyer Complex.Yo Helm had two hits, two steals and three RBI to support Rhonda Rankin's pitching. She went all seven innings, gave up two hits and struck out 16.
In the first round, Salem beat Greenbrier (W.Va.) East 4-2 and Franklin County routed Craig County 34-4.

The Patrick Henry girls won the 400- and 800-meter relays as they finished second in the Vince Bradford Relays, a 28-team meet at Liberty in Lynchburg.
Shannon Martin, Deidre Trigg, Ursula Willis and Armenta Crosby finished the 400 relay in 49.4 seconds. Martin, JoAnne Thomas, Willis and Crosby won the 800 relay in 1:48.8.
Regina Johnson led the Patriot's individual scorers, placing first in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, four inches, and second in the discus at 107-10.
Crosby was second in the 100 dash at 12.2 and third in the long jump at 16-8.
