WESTHEAD TO COACH AT GEORGE MASON

George Mason's search for a men's basketball coach has ended with the selection of Paul Westhead.

Westhead, who coached the Los Angeles Lakers to the 1980 NBA title and coached in five NCAA Tournaments and played in three, will be introduced at a news conference today at Patriot Center. He succeeds Ernie Nestor, who resigned March 8.

Westhead, 54, agreed in principle to terms with athletic director Jack Kvancz, although a contract has not yet been signed. Kvancz interviewed approximately a dozen candidates and appears to have achieved his original goal of hiring a coach who had succeeded at the Division I level.

Westhead posted a 247-153 record in nine years at La Salle and five at Loyola Marymount, but his most prominent success came during the 1979-80 season with the Lakers. After coach Jack McKinney was injured in a bicycle accident 14 games into the season, Westhead, his assistant, took over and guided the team to the NBA title.

Nestor left George Mason after successive 7-21 seasons.

George Mason will have eight players returning, including Troy Manns, the former Patrick Henry High point guard who had an outstanding freshman season. Three players have been signed, and two scholarships remain.
