ROANOKE'S SMITH NETS 10 GOALS
Bret Smith scored a school-record 10 goals and tied another school record with 13 points as Roanoke's men's lacrosse team romped to a 21-11 victory over Whittier (Calif.) on Sunday in Salem.Smith, a junior attackman who led the Maroons in scoring two years ago but missed last year because of an injury, has 36 goals in six games. He and Ray Stoughton had shared the record for most goals in a game (nine). Smith tied Paul Goldsmith's record of 13 points in a game by adding three assists against Whittier (8-3).
The Maroons (5-1), ranked sixth in Division III, have scored 20 goals or more in five straight games, all victories. Erik Daly added four goals and Mark DiBenedetto had one goal and five assists.
Roanoke plays at 17th-ranked Lynchburg on Wednesday.
At Trenton, N.J., Pam Pluguez scored seven goals in leading top-ranked Trenton State (4-0) to an 18-3 victory over third-ranked Roanoke College in women's lacrosse. The Maroons (3-2) play host to Hollins on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Salem.
