BASEBALL-HOKIES WIN BEHIND DALTON

Shortstop Dee Dalton hit a two-run home run and Virginia Tech held on for a 9-7 non-conference victory over George Mason in Fairfax.

Dalton, from Roanoke's Cave Spring High School, hit the home run in the fifth inning for a 7-4 Tech lead. The Hokies (16-3) then added two runs in the eighth on a pinch-hit double by Fred Hatfield.

Starter Rob Gibson of Salem won his second decision without a loss by pitching 6 innings, allowing four runs and striking out six.

Dalton, batting .339 going into the game, finished 2-for-4. His two RBI gave him 15 for the season. Third baseman Bo Durkac was 3-for-5 with two RBI.

At Ferrum, Jerold Smith homered and drove in three runs and David Jones tripled and drove in three more as Ferrum crushed Lynchburg 11-0 behind the two-hit pitching of Scott David and Billy Wagner.

The Panthers (13-3) put away the game with five runs in the seventh inning. David allowed two hits over seven innings. Wagner pitched the last two and struck out all six batters.

At Asheville, N.C., Keith DiYeso had two doubles in his four at-bats and drove in three runs in leading UNC Asheville over Radford 10-3.

For Radford, Denny Van Pelt went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Donnie Fields and Robert Wilson had the Highlanders' other two hits. Jim Abbott took the loss, allowing six hits, six runs, none earned, walking two and striking out one in 4 innings.
