NEWCOMB BEST IN STATE COMPETITION
Kelli Newcomb was the all-around champion Sunday in the 15-and-over division at the Virginia state championship gymnastics meet in Chesapeake.Newcomb, a member of the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics, scored 37.45 to win her age group. She also was state champion in the individual disciplines of bars, beam and floor exercise.
She led her team to a second-place finish overall and qualified for the Region 7 championship meet in Reading, Pa. Teammates Dawn Turpin and Erin Lester also qualified for the Region 7 meet.
Newcomb's scores were 9.45 on the bars, 9.35 on the beam and 9.60 on the floor exercise.
