At Phoenix, Mario Andretti became the oldest man to win an Indy Car race, taking advantage of some wall-banging by other drivers to take his first victory in nearly five years in Valvoline 200 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Andretti, 53, won for the first time since winning in Cleveland in July 1988 and became the first driver to win races in four decades. The previous oldest winner was Johnny Rutherford, 48 when he won the 1986 Michigan 500.

Meanwhile, Nigel Mansell, his body still "very sore" from a crash during practice for the Valvoline 200, was released from a Phoenix hospital and flew back to his home in Clearwater, Fla. He will recuperate until the Indy Car race in two weeks at Long Beach, Calif.
