Those recently receiving promotions include:

Marine Cpl. GEORGE E. AKERS, son of George E. and Mary B. Akers of Hiwassee, received a promotion to corporal while serving with Marine Air Control Squadron Two, 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Air Force Senior Airman AMY Y. VINCENTY, daughter of Ginger Graham of Pulaski. Vincenty, an apprentice radiological specialist, also has re-enlisted after a three-year tour.

Marine Sgt. LEONARD E. FAGAN, a 1988 graduate of Shawsville High School, was recently meritoriously promoted to his present rank while serving with the 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Roanoke.

Marine Pfc. DAVID W. PERDUE, son of Irvin and Norma Perdue of Radford, was meritoriously promoted to his present rank and reported for duty at Marine Corps Engineer School at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

\ DELMAR W. WALKER, son of John H. and Evelyn Walker of Christiansburg, has been promoted to airman first class at Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, S.C., where he is an apprentice communications system radio operator.

\ WILLIAM H. TONEY, JR. has been promoted to the rank of Air Force lieutenant colonel. Toney's wife Katie is the daughter of Alice Loope of Blacksburg. Toney is stationed at Golldfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas.

\ THOMAS M. JONES, son of Bevery D. Jones and Richard Goins of Blacksburg, has been promoted to Army private first class. Jones is stationed at Giessen Depot in Germany.

Air Force Airman ASHLEY H. HARLESS, son of Thomas and Nancy Harless of Pulaski, graduated from liquid fuel systems maintenance course at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Ill.

Marine Pvt. CHRISTOPHER D. SHARK, son of Melvin and Lois Shark of Christiansburg, has completed the Motor Vehicle Operator Course at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Army Pvt. KEVIN D. AUSTIN, son of Judy S. Cox of Pulaski, has completed a unit supply specialist course at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

Army National Guard Pvt. JAMES T. WILLS, son of Kenneth and Lois Wells of Christiansburg, has graduated from a chemical operations specialist course at Fort McClellan in Anniston, Ala.

Army Reserve Pvt. CHRISTOPHER C. GOWDY, son of Jody Craig of Pearisburg, has graduated from the power generation equipment repair course at Fort Belvoir, Va.

Marine Pfc. JEFFREY D. BAYSE, son of Frank M. Bayse of Radford, recently completed the School of Inantry at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Marine Pvt. CHARLES A. CALFEE, son of Carolyn S. Calfee of Dublin, recently completed the School of Inantry at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Those recently reporting for duty, deployed or returning from deployment include:

Marine Pfc. DAVID W. LAWSON, son of David J. Lawson and Kathy T. Richards, both of Pulaski, participated with the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Division from Camp Lejeune, N.C., in exercise Forest Light at Camp Takada, Japan.

Air Force Capt. THEODORE E. HARTENSTEIN, son of Otto H. and Irmtraut B. Hartenstein of Blacksburg, was recently deployed to the Middle East to participate in Operation Provide Comfort. The operation provides security, food, shelter and medical care for Kurdish refugees in Turkey and northern Iraq.

Air Force Senior Master Sgt. MICHAEL C. TICKLE, an avionics test stations superintendent, has reported for duty at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, Ariz. Tickle is the son of Hazel B. Tickle of Pulaski.

Navy Fireman Recruit KEVIN B. STEFFEY, son of Martha A. McLemore of Bastian, reported for duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, whose home port is Norfolk.

Marine Cpl. EDWARD W. NESTER, a 1990 graduate of Pulaski County High School, recentley reported for duty with the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan.

Army Cpl. GUY W. ZAHN, son of Ann C. White of Pulaski, has been deployed to the Sinai as part of the multinational peacekeeping force and observers. The force was established as a part of the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty.

Army Pvt. CLIFTON S. BURROUGHS, son of Danny W. and Susan D. Burroughs of Dubln, has reported for duty at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash., as a power generation equipment mechanic.

Marine Pfc. BRADLEY S. DALTON, son of Larry M. and Julia W. Dalton of Pulaski, recently deployed with the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, Camp Lejeune, N.C., to the Marine Corps Air Gruond Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif., to participate in two live-fire combined arms exercises.

Marine 1st Lt. TONY L. HOWARD, son of Harry M. and Carolyn G. Howard of Radford, reported for duty with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Training Squadran 253, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, N.C.

Airman SAMUEL J. SHUMATE, son of Eddie Shumate and Shumate Debbie Shumate, both of Christiansburg, graduated from Air Force basic training at Lakeland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Navy Seaman Recruit ROY L. SIFFORD, son of Clifford and Alice Sifford of Radford, completed training at the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

Navy Seaman Recruit BRETT McCLELLAND, son of George McClelland of Christiansburg and Nancy Aden of Blacksburg, completed training at the Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Fla.

Air Force Airman TIMOTHY A. SNIDOW, son of David A. Snidow of Pembroke, graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Air Force Airman MARIA A. MILLER, daughter of Myra J. Steele of Floyd and James W. Miller of Blacksburg, graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Air Force Airman TAMI Y. LINKOUS, daughter of Gayle A. Linkous of Christiansburg, graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Air Force Airman BRIAN K. DUNCAN, son of Lee and Anita Duncan of Dublin, graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Army Pvt. JOHANNA J. SMITH, daughter of Judith A. Welker and stepdaughter of Dr. William F. Welker of Christiansburg, completed basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

Marine Pvt. STEVEN W. MELVIN, son of William M. and Linda T. Melvin of Pearisburg, completed recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C.

Navy Seaman Recruit DAVID S. LONG, son of Bobby J. and Mary C. Long of Blacksburg, recently completed basic training at the Recruit Training Station Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Army Pvt. JACOB W. PRICE, son of Kathy and George Price of Dublin, graduated from Army basic training at Fort Leonard E. Wood, in Waynesville, Mo.

Those being honored include:

Marine Lance Cpl. WALTER JOHNSON, son of David and Lona Harrell of Pulaski, recently received a Meritorious Mast.

The honor is an official recognition from the Marine's commanding officer for superior individual performance.

Johnson was cited for outstanding service while assigned with the Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron-24, 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Those participating in special ceremonies include:

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class KENNETH W. BISHOP, son of Granville L. and Clestine J. Bishop of Willis, who recently participated in the commissioning of the guided missile destroyer USS Barry. The ship's home port is Norfolk, where Bishop will be assigned.

Those re-enlisting include:

Army Staff Sgt. ADRIEN CHANG, son of Florence M. Oyadomari of Blacksburg, re-enlisted after 15 years of service. Chang is a missile systems mechanic at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii.
