RURAL RETREAT TEAM TALKS ITS WAY TO TITLE

The forensics team at Rural Retreat High School brought home the school's first state championship in its history this week.

The team, which also won the Hogoheegee District and Region C championships on its way to Saturday's state competition in Charlottesville, had five winners among its 13 members.

Matthew Miller finished first in boys' extemporaneous speaking and Lori Lawson, second in girls' extemporaneous speaking. James Mosley and Stephanie Atwell won first place in duo acting. John Dutton was second in boys' original oratory.

"These kids have worked really hard, the entire team," said Betsy Ely, their coach. Team members had a combined total of 38 years of forensics competition, she said, "so this is not something that has happened overnight." - Southwest bureau
