SPOUSE-ABUSE SHELTER GETS CHALLENGE GRANT
The GIV Benevolent Fund is donating a $50,000 challenge grant, in celebration of Easter, to help rebuild the regional spouse-abuse center destroyed by fire in February 1992.Any donations made by the end of the year to the Family Resource Center, not counting any government funding, will be matched dollar for dollar up to $50,000.
The Benevolent Fund was set up by General Injectables and Vaccines Inc. of Bland County as one of its charitable outlets.
The money will be used for construction and furnishing of a new shelter for battered women and their children from Bland, Carroll, Grayson, Smyth and Wythe counties and the city of Galax.
Construction costs will be more than $300,000. The 4,800-square-foot facility designed by Echols and Sparger of Marion will include office and residential space.
