VASID PICKS UVA GUARD TOP PLAYER
Virginia Cavaliers sophomore guard Cory Alexander has been voted player of the year and Virginia Commonwealth coach Sonny Smith has been selected coach of the year for state Division I schools by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.Joining Alexander in the backcourt on the first team is VCU junior guard Kenny Harris. The first-team frontcourt consists of VCU junior forward Kendrick Warren; Old Dominion freshman center Odell Hodge, who played high school basketball at Laurel Park; and James Madison senior forward William Davis.
On the all-state second team are senior guard Doug Day of Radford, senior guard Bryan Edwards of James Madison, senior center Julius Nwosu of Liberty, sophomore forward Petey Sessoms of Old Dominion and senior forward Sherron Mills of Virginia Commonwealth.
Alexander averaged 18.9 points per game this season to lead all Division I players in the state in scoring. He received 23 of 27 player-of-the-year votes and was a unanimous selection for the All-State first-team backcourt.
Smith led the Rams to a 20-10 record and a berth in the National Invitation Tournament. He received 11 votes for coach of the year, edging Jeff Jones of Virginia and Oliver Purnell of Old Dominion, who had eight votes apiece.
