JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT SPRING WAS SPRUNG . . .
More than two weeks into spring, snow fell briefly in Western and Southside Virginia on Monday and forced a few schools to close early. The National Weather Service's Roanoke office said it received reports of snow, freezing rain and rain in the New River Valley.
There were accumulations of less than 1 inch at higher elevations in Southwest Virginia, the Weather Service reported. There was light snowfall in Roanoke, Danville, Lynchburg and Staunton.
Schools in Floyd County sent students home after lunch, but the temperatures rose well above the freezing mark across the state by early afternoon.
The Weather Service said the frigid mix was due to temperatures that remained in the mid-30s throughout much of the region Monday morning.
