TECH: 3 STUDENTS WERE DISCIPLINED IN MENORAH INCIDENT
Three students were disciplined by the university judicial board in December for vandalizing a Hanukkah menorah in a student dining hall, Virginia Tech announced Monday.Ed Spencer, director of residential programs for Tech, said eight students in Dietrick Dining Hall were caught Dec. 11 with lit candles from the menorah in their food.
When approached by the dining hall staff, the students dispersed and only three could be identified.
The information was released Monday in response to a story in Sunday's newspaper in which a Tech faculty member said the university covered up the incident.
Larry Hincker, director of university relations, said the incident was not publicized because disciplinary action involving students normally is kept confidential.
Spencer said the incident was the third in which someone tampered with the menorah, which was placed in Dietrick along with a variety of other holiday decorations on Dec. 6.
After the first two incidents, Virginia Tech police were brought in to investigate the vandalism because it appeared to be anti-Semitic activity.
