NEWPORT NEWS BASKETBALL PLAYER COMMITS TO VMI
Warren Johnson, a first-team All-Peninsula District selection for Denbigh High School in Newport News, has made an oral commitment to play basketball at VMI.Johnson, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 16 points and six rebounds for Denbigh, which finished 17-7 and split its season series with Group AAA state champion Bethel.
"Anything athletic . . . that's what he does best," Denbigh coach Dennis Kotoufas said. "He rebounds, he runs the court and he has a great first step. Because he's so athletic all he needs is one dribble and he's by everybody."
Johnson, a primary VMI target with the potential to start as a freshman, is VMI's second commitment. B.J. Grinage, a 6-6 post player from Greensboro, N.J., signed with the Keydets in November. - DOUG DOUGHTY SUB for B1 box B4 B1 HEALTHY Healty
