TECH SPLITS WITH WVU IN BASEBALL
Virginia Tech split a college baseball doubleheader against West Virginia on Tuesday, winning the first game 7-3 and losing the second 10-1 at Morgantown, W.Va.In the first game, two-run home runs by shortstop Dee Dalton and catcher Denny Hedspeth in the third inning gave the Hokies (17-4) a 4-0 lead. The Mountaineers pulled to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth. Tech secured the victory with three runs in the top of the seventh. Hokies reliever Jamie Patteson (4-0) pitched 3 shutout innings for the victory.
In the second game, West Virginia (11-13) struck quickly, getting five straight hits and scoring four times in the first inning. Mountaineers starter Dan Barry pitched the complete game; he held Tech to five hits, struck out eight and walked one in seven innings. Tech scored in the sixth inning on J.R. Hawkins' RBI single. Ron Preston (3-1) took the loss. Hawkins was 3-for-7 for the day.
The Hokies play host to Virginia today at 3 p.m.
