ETC. VMI, GILL DEFEAT RADFORD 16-6 IN LACROSSE
Eight points by Spencer Gill helped propel VMI to a 16-6 victory over Radford in a men's college game at Patchin Field in Lexington.Gill had four goals and four assists. Mike Peters and Tim Ervin each had three goals, and Dan DeLawyer had two goals and an assist for the Keydets (4-4), who led 5-3 after a quarter and 7-5 at halftime.
VMI starting goalie Mark Cameron had 13 saves; Radford's Rob Kinele had nine. The Keydets had 51 shots on goal; the Highlanders, 27. Steve Govett and Rick Riker each scored twice for Radford (2-6).
At Lexington, Robert Worrell scored three goals and Cole Atkins added two as Rockbridge County defeated Charlottesville 6-1 in a boys' high school lacrosse game. Goalie Hayes Larsen recorded 11 saves for the win.
Brian Manning of the Pulaski Y-Southwest Aquatic Team finished ninth in the 500-meters freestyle in the YMCA Swimmings Nationals at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. His time of 4 minutes, 36.66 seconds qualified him for the Junior Nationals at Orlando, Fla., in August.
He also placed 11th in the 200-meter freestyle in 1:43.42.
Teammate Rickie Jennings finished 20th in the 200-meter individual medley in 1:59.08.
