EX-ROANOKE COUNTY MAN DIES IN FLORIDA

A 1990 Northside High School graduate was fatally injured Monday night when his car crashed into a concrete telephone pole near the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he was a student, police said.

Stephen E. Bauer, 21, died at an area hospital about an hour after his car spun and slammed into the pole near the campus, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Bauer was driving the car at a high rate of speed just before midnight when it crossed the median of Southwest 16th Street, into the westbound lanes. The car then crossed back into the eastbound side, spun and hit the pole on the driver's side, police said.

Bauer was pronounced dead at a hospital at 12:52 a.m. Tuesday, police said. A passenger who lived at the same address as Bauer refused treatment and was released.

It was unknown whether the two were wearing seat belts, police said.
