NO MORE RETIREMENT PERKS FOR COUNTY'S SUPERINTENDENT
Roanoke County School Superintendent Bayes Wilson will get no more special perks when he retires in June 1994, School Board Chairman Frank Thomas said Tuesday."There will be no changes in the benefits portion of the contract," Thomas said during a budget work session with the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors.
Last year, the School Board gave Wilson a one-time windfall that could be worth about $40,000 when he retires.
Under the deal, Wilson will be paid his regular daily salary - about $350 - for each unused leave day he has accumulated.
Other employees are paid $30 for each sick-leave day they have stockpiled when they retire.
The deal outraged some teachers and county supervisors and helped inspire a petition drive for a countywide referendum on having an elected school board.
Tuesday, Vinton District Supervisor Harry Nickens asked if the School Board had any other perks in mind when it extends Wilson's contract for a final year.
Thomas replied that Wilson would receive a standard 3 percent raise to his $90,640 salary.
"I would anticipate all benefits will be the same," he said.
