TRASH-TRANSFER SITE CONDEMNATION TO START
The Wythe-Bland Joint Public Service Authority will move to condemnation proceedings to buy land in Wythe County for a solid-waste transfer station so the waste can be sent elsewhere for burial. The authority had offered $248,000, the figure recommended by a Roanoke appraisal firm, to the B.C. Umberger family for a 20-acre tract on Virginia 649 across from the Pendleton rock quarry. The family said the matter had been referred to their attorney.
It will cost an estimated $500,000 to build the trash-transfer station after a site is acquired. The authority will negotiate with Waste Management of Greensboro, N.C., to handle the trash.
