OBIT HOOKER, PATRICIA FLANNAGAN
HOOKER, Patricia Flannagan, 66, of Salem, died Saturday, April 3, 1993 in
Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Hooker graduated from Wellesley College, and
she earned a masters degree from Hollins College. She was a number of years a
journalist, working for newspapers and television stations in Salem and
Roanoke. She did research and wrote for the Salem Historical Society, and she
was active and held delegate status in the Virginia Democratic Party. During
the 1950's, Mrs. Hooker was very active in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the
Girl Scouts and Showtimers. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs.
Victoria Hall, who died March 26, whose care she had provided for many years.
Her father was Roy C. Flannagan, the novelist and editorial writer for the
Richmond News Leader, who died in 1951, and her stepfather was Raymond C.
Hall, who had retired from Hall and Company in Richmond to reside in Salem,
dying in 1985. She is survived by her husband, Zebulon Vance Hooker, II,
retired professor of English at Roanoke College; her son, Zebulon Vance
Hooker, III of Salem; her daughters, Martha Preston of London, Elizabeth
Cibula of Canastota, N.Y.; her brother, Roy C. Flannagan Jr. of Athens, Ohio;
her stepsister, Patricia Hall Moore of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren.
Services will be private. John M. Oakey and Sons will be handling
arrangements. The family's home church is St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The
family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be given in Mrs. Hooker's name
to the American Cancer Society.
