FIGHTING BLUES WIN IN SOFTBALL

Sophomore Misty McGuffin pitched a three-hitter for her first high school win as Parry McCluer whipped Craig County 17-2 in a Pioneer District softball game at Buena Vista on Wednesday.

Heather Worley and Stephanie Rhodes supplied the offense for the Fighting Blues (2-2 overall, 2-1 district). Worley was 3-for-3 with four runs batted in, while Rhodes had a double and two triples in a 3-for-3 day.

In other spring sports action:

\ BASEBALL: Carroll County (3-0) swept a non-district doubleheader from Grayson County (1-2) by scores of 8-1 and 3-0.

Brad Leonard gave up three hits, walked one and struck out five while permitting one unearned run to get the win in the opener. In the nightcap, Zack Foley allowed just one hit, walked two and fanned seven in pitching a shutout.

Catcher Kevin DeHaven socked a three-run homer for the Cavaliers in the opener. Second baseman Tony Berrier went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for Carroll County in the second game.

At Alleghany, Patrick Hall got his third pitching win, struck out seven and allowed five hits over seven innings as the Mountaineers shut out Salem 3-0. Todd Cook and Dusty Rowland each had two hits for Alleghany (4-0, 1-0 Blue Ridge). The Spartans are 2-2, 0-1.

At Shawsville, the Shawnees (4-1) defeated Bath County (2-1) 6-0 in a non-district game. Sophomore Drew Smith (3-0) pitched a three-hitter for Shawsville, striking out 10. He also drove in three runs.

At New Castle in a Pioneer District contest, center fielder Michael Twitty homered for Parry McCluer (1-0, 1-0) in a 5-2 victory over Craig County (0-5, 0-2). Keith Martin got the win, allowing four hits and striking out 11.

\ BOYS' LACROSSE: At Roanoke, Pendleton Grove got seven goals in leading Patrick Henry to a 11-4 thrashing of Hargrave Military Academy.

\ BOYS' TRACK: At Glenvar, the Highlanders won a tri-meet with 65 points compared to 59 for James River and 35 for Parry McCluer. Glenvar's Frank Harrison was the only double winner in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:03.0 and 3,200 in 10:48. James River's Alex Brown had a good early season time of 11.4 in the 100 meters.

At Pearisburg, Steve Johnson captured firsts in the high jump, triple jump and 100, leading Giles to victory in a Mountain Empire District meet. The Spartans finished with 111 1/2 points, followed by Floyd County with 78 1/2, Narrows (22) and Galax (16). Floyd's David Goorskey (1,600 and 3,200) and Narrows' Kevin Burgess (200 and 400) were double winners.

At Fort Chiswell, Mike Brown had firsts in the 100 meters (11.5) and the 110-meter hurdles (16.7) to lead Grayson County to a Mountain Empire District victory with 68 points. Auburn was second with 53, Fort Chiswell and Shawsville had 41 each. V.J. Lumia of Auburn had three firsts in the 200 meters (23.9), 400 (54.5) and the high jump (5-6). The only other double winner was Fort Chiswell's Donnie Dillow in the two-mile (10:51) and the 800 (2:21).

\ GIRLS' TRACK: At Laurel Park, the Lancers scored 144 points to take a victory over Martinsville (117), Patrick County (82), Magna Vista (74) and Fieldale-Collinsville (30) in a Piedmont District meet. Valenica Eggleston had firsts in the high hurdles (16.9) and low hurdles (50.9). Another Lancer double winner was Miranda Hairston in the 1,600 (5.40) and 3,200 (12:18) meter runs.

At Alleghany, junior Jennifer Vest won four events for Rockbridge County, but the Wildcats lost the team competition 67-60 to Alleghany. Vest won the 100-meter hurdles (17.3), 100-meter dash (13.2), 200-meter dash (27.6) and the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches).
