MW Windows makes temporary layoffsMW Windows of Rocky Mount on Wednesday reported temporary layoff of slightly more than 100 production workers.
The action was blamed on a recent halt of construction by snow and rain, according to company President Mike Harman. He said he expects the employees will be back at work by May or June.
Until winter weather hit in March, he said, the window manufacturer was running at a record pace and about 700 production workers were employed, about 115 more than a year ago.
The inventory of windows has backed up in the last 30 days "and it's tough to find a place to put them," Harman said.
Because the action is temporary, the company will continue providing hospitalization and other benefits.
Despite the higher cost of lumber, Harman said, he expects a record business year because low mortgage rates are stimulating homebuilding.
MW Windows, the trade name for MW Manufacturers, is a sister company of Grove Worldwide, operator of a Salem plant. Both are owned by Hanson Plc, a British conglomerate. - Staff report
