2 ROANOKE COMPANIES GET MARKET-PLANNING HONORS

Two Roanoke companies - Singer Furniture and Valcom Inc. - on Wednesday received the Governor's Award for Excellence in International Market Planning.

They were among four Virginia firms recognized for sponsoring and working with graduate-student research teams on development of international business plans.

The awards were presented by Catherine Magennis, secretary of economic development, in Richmond. The students were recognized for their winning export-market studies.

Five University of Virginia students identified markets and prepared an international marketing plan for Singer Furniture. Another team of five Virginia Tech students developed a marketing plan for Valcom, an assembler of voice paging systems.

They were chosen from a total of 25 companies paired with graduate student teams.

Jay Hershey, coordinator for the International Market Planning program in the Economic Development office, said Virginia is believed to be the only state conducting such a program.
