CARROLL TAKES 2 IN BASEBALL

Carroll County (3-0) swept a non-district baseball doubleheader from Grayson County (1-2) by scores of 8-1 and 3-0 at Hillsville on Wednesday.

Brad Leonard gave up three hits, walked one and struck out five while permitting one unearned run to get the win in the opener. In the nightcap, Zack Foley allowed just one hit, walked two and fanned seven in pitching a shutout.

Catcher Kevin DeHaven socked a three-run homer for the Cavaliers in the opener. Second baseman Tony Berrier went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for Carroll County in the second game.

In other baseball:

At Staunton River, the Golden Eagles (1-1, 1-1) beat Nelson County (0-3, 0-3) 3-2 in a Seminole District game that went eight innings. Brian Hawkins' two-out triple scored Dwight Orange from first with the winning run. Geoff Hill went the distance for the victory and he scattered eight hits.

Scott Gillespie and Shane Godsey each had two hits and knocked in two runs, leading Amherst County to a 4-1 win over previously unbeaten Jefferson Forest in a Seminole District game.

At Shawsville, the Shawnees (4-1) defeated Bath County (2-1) 6-0. Sophomore Drew Smith (3-0) pitched a three-hitter for Shawsville while striking out 10. He drove in three runs.

At Giles, the Spartans downed visiting Christiansburg 5-2. Steve Steele struck out 10 and allowed just two hits for Giles (1-1). Shortstop Raypheal Milton had a two-run single in the fifth to break open the game and give the Spartans a 5-1 lead.

\ BOYS' TRACK: At Cave Spring, the Knights beat Franklin County 77-41 in a Roanoke Valley District meet as Tiki Barber won the long jump (22 feet, 3/8 inches), triple jump (44-1), 100-meter dash (10.9 seconds) and 200-meter (22.6) before anchoring the winning 4x100 meter relay team that had a time of 44.2.

At Pearisburg, Steve Johnson captured firsts in the high jump, triple jump and 100-meter run, leading the Spartans to victory in a Mountain Empire District meet. Giles finished with 111 1/2 points. Floyd County was second with 78 1/2, followed by Narrows (22) and Galax (16). Floyd's David Goorskey (1,600 and 3,200) and Narrows' Kevin Burgess (200 and 400) won twice.

At Fort Chiswell, Mike Brown had firsts in the 100 meters (11.5) and the 110-meter hurdles (16.7) to lead Grayson County to a four-way Mountain Empire District victory with 68 points. Auburn was second with 53 ahead of Fort Chiswell and Shawsville with 41 each. V.J. Lumia of Auburn had three firsts in the 200 meters (23.9), 400 (54.5) and the high jump (5-6).

At Christiansburg, Von Lewis won the 110 high hurdles, 300 intermediate hurdles and high jump, leading the Blue Demons past William Fleming 82-50 in a non-district meet. Christiansburg won 11 of 16 events, including a sweep of the 800, 1600 and 3200 relays.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: At Cave Spring, the Knights topped Franklin County 75-43 in a Roanoke Valley District meet as Emily Rakes scored firsts in the high jump (5-0) and high hurdles (18.7).

At Pearisburg, Floyd County's Monica Lucas won the long jump, 100, 200 and anchored the winning 400-relay team, but it wasn't enough as Giles captured the team competition in the Mountain Empire District meet. The Spartans finished with 124 points. Floyd County was second with 86, while Narrows had 11 and Galax nine. Giles' Janet Dillon won the 1,600 and shot put.

At Christiansburg, Maureen Jackson won the shot put and discus, and Bethany Eigel captured the 1,600 and 3,200 distance runs as the Blue Demons downed William Fleming 72-55 in non-district meet.
