SPARTANS WIN TWICE IN SOFTBALL

Salem swept a non-district softball doubleheader from Cave Spring by scores of 15-3 and 4-3 in nine innings at the Moyer Complex as freshman Ronda Rankin won both games in relief Wednesday.

In the opener, Rankin pitched the last 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts, allowing one run and one hit. Center fielder Yolanda Helm went 4-for-5, scored three runs, stole two bases and knocked in a run. In the nightcap, Rankin pitched the last four innings. She struck out three, gave up three hits and one run.

The Spartans (5-0), who rallied for three runs to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh, won it in the ninth when left fielder Jennifer Houchins, came home from first on a three-base error. Jenny Kallio went the distance for the Knights (1-2).

\ BASEBALL: At Cave Spring, the Knights got 18 hits in a 17-3 victory over E.C. Glass. Kevin Davis was 3-for-4, with a three-run homer and five RBI. Scott Fayed was 4-for-5 for Cave Spring (2-2).

\ BOYS' LACROSSE: At Roanoke, Pendleton Grove got seven goals in leading Patrick Henry to a 11-4 thrashing of Hargrave Military Academy.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Salem, the Spartans defeated Northside 3-2 in a Blue Ridge District match. Drew Bailey scored the winning goal with less than five minutes left.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Salem, goalie Leanne Cline recorded a shutout as the Spartans blanked Magna Vista 4-0 in a non-district match.

\ BOYS' TRACK: At Cave Spring, the Knights beat Franklin County 77-41 in a Roanoke Valley District meet as Tiki Barber won the long jump (22 feet, 3/8 inches), triple jump (44-1), 100-meter dash (10.9 seconds) and 200-meter (22.6) before anchoring the winning 400-meter relay team that had a time of 44.2.

Ronde Barber won the high hurdles (15.3), intermediate hurdles (42.0) and started off by leading off the 400 relay team. He also had a second place in the triple jump (41-0).

At Salem, Keith Moyer captured firsts in the 100, 200, 400 relay and long jump, leading the Spartans (65) past Brookville (60) and William Byrd (27).

At Glenvar, the Highlanders won a tri-meet with 65 points compared to 59 for James River and 35 for Parry McCluer. Glenvar went 1-2 in the high jump with David Robinson tying a school record of 6-4 to beat sophomore Greg Stone at 6-3.

At Daleville, Jerad Watkins won the 110 and 300 hurdles, pacing Northside to 113 5/6 points in the win over Lord Botetourt, which had 22 1/6, in a Blue Ridge District boys' meet. It was both schools' season-opener.

At Patrick Henry, the Patriots whipped Pulaski County 92-46 as Jamie Price won the 100-yard dash (10.3), 220(23.6) and ran a leg on the winning 440 relay team.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: At Cave Spring, the Knights topped Franklin County 75-43 in a Roanoke Valley District meet as Emily Rakes scored firsts in the high jump (5-0) and high hurdles (18.7).

At Glenvar, Emilee Hall captured three events and Trisha Nervo two as the Highlanders (97 1/2 points) rolled to a Pioneer District tri-meet win over Parry McCluer (22) and James River (16 1/2).

At Salem, Christine Grecus won four events - long jump, high jump, 100 and 200 - leading William Byrd to a 65-62 win over Salem.

At Patrick Henry, the Patriots minus an injured Arminta Crosby, beat Pulaski County 95-36 as Deidre Trigg won the triple jump (32-7 1/2), high jump (4-4), 100-yard hurdles (17.6), the 330-yard hurdles (53.1) and ran a leg on the winning 440-yard relay team.
