Roanoker competes in national swim meet

Roanoke resident Scott Davies competed recently in the U.S. Swimming Association's national 18-and-under swim meet at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Davies, 17, a member of the Carter Center Aquatics Marlins, took 16th place in the nation in the 100-yard butterfly and 22nd in the 200-yard individual medley.

He also qualified to swim the 100-yard freestyle in the association's Summer Junior National meet in Orlando, Fla., in August.

Open tennis tourney scheduled April 23-25

The Roanoke Valley Tennis Association and the Roanoke Parks and Recreation will sponsor an open tennis tournament April 23-25 at the River's Edge Sports Complex.

There will be divisions for men's and women's singles and doubles, men's and women's singles and doubles for players age 35 and over, and mixed doubles. The fees are $20 for singles and $25 for doubles.

Registration will be held through April 16 at the Parks and Recreation office, 210 Reserve Ave. S.W. For more information, call 981-2236.

Supersonics win title in Pee Wee contests

The Cave Spring Supersonics won the Cave Spring and Roanoke County Pee Wee basketball championships, with 29 wins for the season.

The team also won the Cave Spring Christmas Tournament and were runners-up in the Knights of Columbus, Terrier Classic and Virginia Recreation and Parks Society tournaments.

Team members are: Fielding Fochtman, Justin Creasy, Jason Blake, Ryan Watson, Alex Henry, Adam Padgett, Jon McCann, Wes Derryberry, Brian Chadwick and Brian Snow.

Steve Padgett is head coach, assisted by Roy Creasy.

Knights' tournament winners announced

The North Roanoke Vikings, Williamson Road Wahoos and Vinton Cavaliers were the victors March 28 in the Junior, Little and Midget leagues, respectively, of the 24th annual Knights of Columbus Basketball Tournament.

The Junior League final went down to the wire with a 15-point comeback by the Vinton Hokies. Brian Carson scored a 3-pointer to put the game into overtime at 64 all. But the Vikings' Cory Shelton scored six points to win the game for his team, 71-70.

In addition to Shelton and Carson, All-Tournament Team players from the Junior League are Jason Custer of the North Roanoke Celtics, Jason Tolbert and Chad Aldridge of the Vikings and Jason McDaniels of the Hokies. The Vikings' Brian Crosswhite, who led his team with 24 points, was named the Rev. John T. Ryan Most Valuable Player.

In the Little League, the Williamson Road Wahoos defeated the Cloverdale Bulls 68-52 for the title.

Little League all-stars are Scott Washburn of the North Roanoke Lakers; Xavier Lee, Lee Suggs and Greg Perdue of the Wahoos, Adam Smith and Brad Hutchins of the Bulls; Jerten Evans and Carl Goode of the Bedford 76ers; Matt McGuire of the Vinton Running Rebels; and Chris Fischer of the South Salem Maroons. The Wahoos' Roy Welcher was named the Dick Mayo Most Valuable Player.

The Vinton Cavaliers upset the No. 1-seeded Cave Spring Supersonics 35-30 for the Midget League crown.

Bo Royal of the Vinton Cavaliers won the Bob Canfield Most Valuable Player Award. Royal was joined on the all-tournament team by Adam Padgett of the Supersonics, Dustin Vaden of the Vinton Cavaliers, Chad Hutchins of the Cloverdale Bulls, Jason Underwood of the North Roanoke Cavaliers and Robbie Bielawski of the North Roanoke Bullets.

In the cheerleading competition, the Eagle Rock Eagles took first place in the 8-10 age division, and the North Roanoke Bulls were the winners in the 11-13 age division.

The winner of the High School One-on-One Contest was Kevin Garst of Salem High School, who beat his teammate Mark Byington 21-19.
