WENDY MILLS, a housekeeper at the Super 8 Motel on Thirlane Road, has Mills been named the chain's employee of the year.

Mills was selected by co-workers and company owners on the basis of quality work, involvement in the community, willingness to get along with others and willingness to take on additional duties.

The award is given to only one employee from the 950 franchised Super 8 Motel properties.

\ LARRY WHORLEY, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Whorley of 633 Murray Ave. S.E., has been named social service worker of the year at the Lexington, Ky., Veterans Affairs Hospital.

Whorley is the director of the alcohol and drug rehabilitation center there.

\ GLENNIS HELMINTOLLER has been named Woman of the Year by the Tanglewood Chapter of the American Business Women's Association.

Helmintoller, a charter member and past president of the chapter, is secretary senior for the humanities division at Virginia Western Community College.

\ SHEILA LUSHER has been promoted to marketing assistant and production manager for National Business College's marketing group.

Her responsibilities include managing the production of all marketing materials and overseeing direct mail responses for the college's eight campuses. She also is circulation manager of the college's magazine, Ideas at Work.

Lusher, who joined the college in 1990 as an administrative assistant, has designed promotional brochures, created analysis reports and developed an internal inventory system.

She attended Concord College and has worked for Wike Associates and American General.

\ R. THOMAS ALOUF JR. of 8700 Boones Chapel Road has been promoted to captain with USAir. He joined Piedmont Airlines in 1986 before its merger with USAir.

Alouf is a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla.

\ JOHNNIE BRAKE has been named one of Kansas City Life Insurance Co.'s 25 leading agents for 1992. He was selected from among more than 2,500 agents nationwide.

Brake is a general agent in the Johnnie Brake Agency in Roanoke.
