Spanish students need hosts for August visit

Host families are being sought to provide homes to Spanish teen-agers who will be coming to the Roanoke area for four weeks in August.

The EF Foundation, an international, nonprofit organization, will bring a group of students, ages 13-18, from Spain to the Roanoke Valley for a four-week stay in August. The students speak English, are insured and have their own spending money.

Host families do not need to have children; single parents and retired couples are encouraged to apply. There is no financial obligation for the hosts.

Interested families can call the foundation's Roanoke-area representative Ruby Cockran at 890-4671.

Adult Care Center holds benefit raffle

The Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley is holding a raffle to raise funds for its day-care programs for older adults.

Tickets, at $1 each, are good for chances at various prizes, such as a trip for two to Orlando, Fla.; a go-kart; a resort weekend for two; and merchandise gift certificates.

Prize drawings will be held May 12. Tickets may be purchased from any Kiwanis club member or by calling the Adult Care Center at 983-1026.

Foreign students need homes for school year

High school students from around the world will be coming to the United States for the 1993-94 school year, and families are needed to provide homes for them.

Pat Russell, Roanoke coordinator for the Academic Year in America program of the American Institute for Foreign Study, has begun interviewing families interested in welcoming students from Germany, Spain, Brazil, or any one of 30 other countries.

Students, who have their own spending money and medical insurance, will arrive in August to begin the school year in Roanoke Valley public schools. They will carry a full course load and join clubs, sports teams and participate in school activities.

Families who sign up now will be allowed to choose the student they wish to invite. Letters can be exchanged immediately.

For more information, call Russell at 362-7928.
