LEE SMITH DESERVES RECOGNITION
MANY THANKS for the March 29 Associated Press article (Extra section, "Conference explores identity, direction of Southern writing"). It included the interview with Lee Smith, who was recently inducted in Chattanooga into the Fellowship of Southern Writers. Her "Oral History" and other novels conclusively argue for that recognition.I am glad the writer mentioned that Ms. Smith is from Grundy. Selfishly, I wish it had been mentioned that she is a graduate of the Hollins College creative-writing program. Happily I can report that she will be the college's commencement speaker in May.
