THE TIPOFF

TEXAS LEAGUERS AND BALTIMORE CHOPS: The Salem Buccaneers begin the hometown part of their long march to the Carolina League championship Tuesday night at 7 when they begin a three-game series against the Wilmington (Del.) Blue Rocks at Salem's Municipal Field.

Tuesday's opener will feature a color guard and music from the Dignitaries, the Roanoke Valley Community Band.

The Frederick Keys will come to town April 16-18. For complete information, call 389-3333.\ \ NOW'S YOUR CHANCE: If you've never seen nor heard folksinger and instrumentalist John McCutcheon perform, you might want to hustle over to Whitman Auditorium of Virginia Western Community College on April 22.

The Charlottesville musician, singer, songwriter and storyteller will present a concert that night at 8. It will be an opportunity to see and hear why critics have called him "the Bruce Springsteen of folk music" and said he is "every bit the storyteller that Garrison Keillor is."

Tickets are $5, on sale at the VWCC bookstore, or you can charge them by calling 857-7334. All seats are reserved. Laura Pole and Greg Trafidlo will open the show.\ \ GOSPEL MUSICAL: Life and love are the subjects of "I Need a Man," a musical by Michael Matthews that will be presented at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium Wednesday and Thursday nights at 8.

Performers include Cheryl "Pepsii" Riley, Roy Fegan and Sean McLemore. The performances promise to be lively, if a bit preposterous. The Dallas Morning News described it as raucous and all-over-the-place, but said it was saved by its gospel singing.

Tickets are $16.50. Call 981-1201.\ \ OUT THERE: Technicon 10, a science-fiction and fantasy convention featuring an art show, auction, masquerade contest, dance, game show and role-playing games, will take place today through Sunday at the Donaldson Brown Center at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

One-day admission is $15. Weekend tickets are $20 for students and $24 for the general public. The event is sponsored by science fiction and fantasy enthusiasts at Virginia Tech.

Call 552-0572.\ \ SPRING SING: Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" will be presented Thursday night at 8 by the University Choral Ensembles at Radford University. This version calls for two pianos and percussion. It will feature student soloists and members of the university's Percussion Ensemble.\ \ FRESH AND VITAL: That's what they say about the Debussy Trio, which will perform works for harp, flute and viola Monday night at 8:15 in Talmadge Hall of Hollins College. A reception will follow in the Green Drawing Room, and it, like the concert, is free.\ \ EXCELLENT REEDERS: The Watauga Saxophone Quartet will appear Tuesday night at 8 at Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon. Admission is $4.

The group will play works by Bach, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Dvorak, among others. The musicians performed at last summer's Virginia Highlands Festival. Call 628-6094, 466-3444 or 783-6645.\ \ GET CENTERED: "IRS" is the seasonally appropriate title of the Centerpiece staged reading set for Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. at Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke's Center in the Square.

Ernest Zulia directs. Admission is free, and you can take a lunch.
