INDIANS SLIP PAST AUBURN

James Shealor scattered six hits over 6 1/3 innings and added a two-run double but it was Wayne Caldwell who put Blacksburg over the top with a two-run fifth-inning home run as the Indians beat Auburn 6-5 in high school baseball Thursday.

Shealor struck out eight before Caldwell came on in the bottom of the seventh with the tying run on second to get his second save. The homer was Caldwell's second for Blacksburg, which won its first game in three outings. It was the first loss for the Eagles.

In other baseball:

At New Castle, Jeff Tucker slammed a home run and pitched effective relief as Covington rallied twice for a 13-9 baseball victory over Craig County on Thursday. Tucker pitched the final 5 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and three unearned runs, striking out nine.

At Rocky Gap, Ben Basham's three-run homer highlighted Shawsville's six-run second inning as the Shawnees (5-1) rocked the Eagles 13-0 in a game shortened to five innings. Basham finished with four RBI and Jason Booth added three hits and two RBI. Tony Maxey limited Rocky Gap to two hits.

Floyd County exploited seven errors to beat host North Cross 13-5 in the second of two games Thursday and Mike Hylton twice pitched out of bases-loaded jams, once with the bases full and just one out, as the Buffaloes won 8-5 in the opener. North Cross fell to 3-4.

At Tazewell, the Bulldogs used two errors to push across an eighth-inning run in a 4-3 win over Giles. Stevie Steele had an RBI double for Giles.

Altavista snapped a five-game, season-opening losing streak after a Jefferson Forest rally fell short and the Colonels (1-5 overall, 1-5 district) hung on for a 4-3 Seminole District victory. The Cavaliers (3-2, 3-2) scored two runs in the seventh innings before Altavista pitcher Ryan Bennett foiled their hopes. Bennett also went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Gary Tyree pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out seven, and went 2-for-2 with three RBI as Rockbridge County pasted guest James River 15-0 in a non-district game shortened because of the slaughter rule. James River is winless in three starts.

Kelly Dampeer went 4-for-4 with a solo home run and Ben Taylor had a two-run homer as Northside beat host Christiansburg 8-4 in a non-district game. Alan Christian pitched a six-hitter, striking of seven for the Vikings (2-0-1). The Blue Demons (2-3) squandered two home runs by Jason Basham and one each by Denny Self and Brock Whitlock.

At William Fleming, Jay Arnold pitched a complete game five-hitter, striking out 11, as Pulaski County edged the Colonels 4-3. Fleming pitcher Al Holland Jr. pitched a three-hitter and struck out 17.

\ SOFTBALL: At New Castle, Covington's Nancy Shawver had four hits, as many as all the Craig County players could produce, as the Cougars outlasted the Rockets 21-14. Covington won despite allowing 23 walks.

At Lord Botetourt, Floyd County and the Cavaliers split a doubleheader. The Buffaloes won the first game 3-1 behind Theresa Gallimore's five-hit pitching. Floyd took advantage of 11 errors and a wild pitch to score three unearned runs. Lord Botetourt took the second game 15-3. Ashley Moore hit a single, double and triple. Moore, Denise McNitt, Mandy Sowers and Shabnam Gideon each drove in two runs.

At Lynchburg, Ellen Brenner and Karyn Harter each had two hits with two RBI as North Cross downed Timberlake Christian 7-5.

Rhonda Rankin hit two home runs to help Salem defeat host William Fleming 23-2 in a game called in the fifth inning by the slaughter rule. Jennifer Moushin and Yo Helm also hit home runs for the Spartans (6-0). Amy Atkins (2-0) struck out three and walked four. Fleming is 0-2.

At Lynchburg, E.C. Glass turned a hit, stolen base and throwing error into a seventh-inning run for a 7-6 win over Patrick Henry. The Patriots' Shelly King pitched a five-hitter, but PH committed six errors. King had two hits and Pam Witten drove in two with a triple and single for PH.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Nathan Gessner of Pulaski County booted the game-winner on a direct kick from 50 yards out with about 10 minutes left as Pulaski County edged William Fleming 2-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game at River's Edge. Kelley Graham gave Fleming (2-2, 0-1) a 1-0 lead before Aaron Quinlan tied it for the Cougars (1-0, 1-0).

At Blacksburg, Ben Cherry had a goal and an assist as Blacksburg downed Radford 3-0. Mark Hutchins and Augie Niles added goals for the Indians (2-0) and three goalies combined on the shutout. Radford (3-1) played without two key starters.

Joel Allen, Joey Coles, and Lee Fisher scored two goals each as Liberty (2-0, 2-0 Seminole) routed host Staunton River (0-3, 0-3) 11-0.

Junior Andy McCaskill scored both goals for William Byrd (3-0) as the Terriers defeated Salem 2-0. Kevin Niday added an assist for Byrd, which outshot the Spartans 25-2. Salem is 2-2.

Dan Sell scored a goal in the first overtime as Lord Botetourt nipped visiting Northside 2-1 in a Blue Ridge District game. Fabio Squina, from Brazil, also scored for the Cavaliers (3-1, 2-1). Robbie Trent scored for Northside (0-3-1, 0-2).

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Salem, Chanda Ingram scored two goals as Cave Spring routed Salem 6-0. Goalies Amy Hollar and Heather Krause combined on the shutout.

At River's Edge, Carrie Moore scored three unassisted goals as Patrick Henry shut out North Cross 3-0. The Patriots outshot North Cross 22-2.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: Salem won all but the No. 1 singles match as it beat Radford 8-1 to hand the Bobcats their first regular-season loss in four seasons.

\ LACROSSE: At Vinton, Brian Cooley scored four goals as Vinton blasted Wooster (Ohio) High 10-3. Goalie Kirk Lancaster recorded 12 saves for Vinton, the club team of William Byrd.
