UVA RECRUIT SCORES 12 IN ALL-STAR GAME

On an otherwise productive evening, Virginia basketball signee Jamal Robinson was downcast Thursday that he couldn't be the hero of the Capital Classic all-star game.

"I've got to do better than that if I'm going to play next year," said Robinson, who had 12 points for the United States team, an 88-86 loser to the Capital All-Stars at Cole Field House.

The U.S. team, which trailed 83-72 with 3:26 left, had a chance to take the lead when Robinson drove into the lane and took a 10-foot jumper with 13 seconds left and the score 86-86.

The shot missed, the Capital All Stars grabbed the rebound, and Anwar McQueen hit two free throws after being fouled by Danny Earl of the U.S. team with 11 seconds left.

"We wanted to go inside," Robinson said, "but there wasn't much time left on the [45-second] clock when I got the ball. It wasn't the shot I would have wanted."

Robinson also was kicking himself for a pair of missed free throws with 1:28 left, but he played an entertaining, up-and-down game with which the Cavaliers have not normally been associated.

"He looks like the kind of player who can handle my passes and finish them off with dunks," said Mike Powell, another UVa signee, who scored two points for the Capital All-Stars.

Robinson, a 6-foot-7 swingman from Queens, N.Y., shaves his head and plays with a Band-Aid on his left cheek, a look that he intends to bring to Charlottesville.

McQueen was named most valuable player for the Capital All-Stars and 6-11 Massachusetts signee Marcus Camby was the choice for the U.S. team. Camby had game highs of 19 points, 19 rebounds and five blocked shots.

There were nine ACC signees in the game, including Duke-bound Greg Newton and Jeff Capel. Newton suffered a knee injury with 15:38 left and was in obvious pain when he was helped from the court, but he later returned to the game.
