BUCS WIN OPENER 2-1
Salem pitcher Gary Wilson scattered three hits, walked three and struck out four hitters in five innings Thursday as the Buccaneers opened their Carolina League season with a 2-1 victory over the Kinston Indians.Salem scored both its runs in the sixth inning. Left fielder Jeff Conger led off with a double to right-center and took third on Marty Neff's sacrifice bunt. First baseman Michael Brown drove in Conger with a single up the middle and then stole second. Right fielder Trace Rayland's single to left drove in Brown.
In the second inning, with an 0-2 count and nobody on, Wilson threw an inside pitch to Kinston's Tony Mitchell that grazed the left fielder's head. Mitchell charged the mound and both benches cleared, but no punches were thrown.
