ALLEGHANY SHERIFF'S OFFICER INVESTIGATED

State police are investigating a sexual harassment complaint against the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department, authorities said Thursday.

Cecil Handy, special agent in charge of criminal investigations for state police headquarters in Salem, said the probe involves a complaint filed by a female prisoner against a correctional officer at the Alleghany County Jail.

Under Virginia law, state police investigate allegations of criminal offenses by employees of local law enforcement agencies.

Handy declined to identify the deputy under investigation and also declined to release details of the inmate's complaint. He said his office has been involved in the investigation for about 10 days.

Alleghany Sheriff Danny Warlitner confirmed the investigation, but refused to comment further.
