Joseph Davidson Inc., Roanoke operator of the Davidsons and Davidsons Outdoors menswear stores, said it will open its eighth store in July at Farmville.
The company also announced that this week it created a clearance center as a new department inside its Valley View Mall shop.
The new store will be an unit of the company's Davidsons Outdoors chain, which features casual clothing by national brand manufacturers and private-label merchandise.
It will be at 228 N. Main St. in downtown Farmville in space now used as an outlet store for Virginia Shoe Co. of Farmville. Virginia Shoe will continue sharing the store.
The clearance warehouse in the company's Valley View store will carry current- and prior-season merchandise and specially purchased clothing to sell at 25 to 75 percent off regular prices, the company said.
Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. has killed a proposal to extend toll-free, local calling between Christiansburg and Locust Grove, citing a survey that showed most Christiansburg phone customers rejected the plan.
The Virginia State Corporation Commission said 368 customers returned ballots favoring the proposal but 488 were opposed. Locust Grove customers, served by Citizens Telephone Cooperative, petitioned the SCC for the local calling exchange.
Extended local service eliminates toll charges but increases monthly bills for affected customers. Locust Grove customers would have paid an additional $2.63 a month for the change, while Christiansburg customers would have paid 9 cents more a month.
