Lunch at the Zoo

Mill Mountain Zoo will present "Lunch is a Zoo" today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Crestar Plaza in downtown Roanoke.

Guests can enjoy lunch while listening to animal talks. A petting zoo will also be held.

Special activities are planned from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Mill Mountain Zoo as part of the annual Zoobilation program. A magic show will be held at 3 p.m. Tree kangaroos will be featured in one of the exhibits.

Beginning Saturday, the zoo will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Admission is $3.50 for adults, $2 for children under 12 and free for children under 2. Call 343-3241.

4-Miler race

The Sixth Annual Shenandoah Life/Musselwhite and Associates 4-Miler is scheduled for May 8 at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the race will go to the West End Center, which provides programs for inner-city children.

The course runs from 2301 Brambleton Ave. S.W. to the Roanoke County Administration Building and back. There will be 13 age categories for men and women.

Entry fees are $12 until April 28, $15 after. The race will be limited to 750 runners.

It will also include the Fourth Annual Media Challenge, with members of local television, radio and print media competing for the best combined team score.

First Friday rescheduled

This season's first First Friday's at Five, scheduled for a rainy April 2, was postponed till April 23.

The Downtown Roanoke after-work bash will be from 5-8 p.m. at the Dominion Plaza, between Salem and Norfolk Avenues. Folks must be 21 to attend, and there is a $2 admission fee, which benefits various charities. Food, drink and live entertainment will be on hand. 342-2028.

Circus is coming

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will bring its 122nd edition to the Roanoke Civic Center from April 22-25.

The show, featuring King Tusk, the giant elephant who consumes 300 pounds of hay, 100 pounds of vegetables and 100 gallons of water per day, will play April 22-23 at 7:30 p.m., April 24 at 3 and 7:30 p.m., and April 25 at 1:30 and 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $7.50, $9.50, $11.50, with a $3 discount on April 22 tickets.

Writer to speak

Writer Lee Smith will discuss her works at the Blue Ridge Regional Library in Martinsville on April 23 at 11:30 a.m., and will sign copies of her books at 12:15 p.m. A luncheon served at the Piedmont Arts Association center will follow.

Smith, a 1967 Hollins College graduate, is author of the best-selling novels "Fancy Strut," "Cakewalk," "Oral History," and most recently, "The Devil's Dream."
