PREGNANCY CENTER NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Pregnancy center needs volunteers

The Crisis Pregnancy Center of Roanoke Valley, a Christian organization that promotes alternatives to abortions, is seeking volunteers to work as receptionists, in-office counselors and home hotline counselors.

A training session will run from May 4 through 27, 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday.

Those interested in volunteering should call the center, 362-3007, before April 19.

Volunteer seamstresses, clerical workers and supply counselors, who organize and distribute maternity and baby supplies, also are being sought. They will be provided on-the-job training.

Methodists to expand camp at Shawsville

Camp Alta Mons, a United Methodist retreat center near Shawsville that's used by many other groups, will be expanded through a half-million dollar campaign scheduled to be held this summer.

Delegates to a recent Roanoke District conference of the church overwhelmingly approved promotion of the drive.

Plans call for renovation of some existing structures, additional new buildings and a new swimming pool.

Alta Mons is on 500 acres at the foot of Christiansburg Mountain. Once a resort, it was bought nearly 35 years ago and has gradually been developed as an enrichment center for a wide variety of people.

An all-weather retreat house built about five years ago makes the camp usable year around, and in warm weather it is suitable for youth camps and adult gatherings.

In 1992 more than 500 children and youths attended camps at Alta Mons, and throughout the year buildings were reserved well in advance, according to the Rev. James W. Reynolds Jr., a supporter.

The camp is operated by United Methodists in the Roanoke Valley and in Botetourt, Montgomery, Craig and Giles Counties. Limited camping space also is available to the public.
