TECH'S PYNE ON PLAYBOY TEAM
Virginia Tech center Jim Pyne, considered Tech's best ever at that position, has been chosen a Playboy All-American.He'll spend May 7-9 in Phoenix doing photo shoots and assorted other publicity activities associated with the magazine's 37th annual all-star team.
"I'm thrilled," said Pyne, who last fall was disturbed about what he considered a lack of exposure and recognition on all-star teams. "This is a great step in the right direction as far as all that goes, my goals and what I wanted. It helps me personally and it helps Virginia Tech. I'll have my uniform on."
Playboy sports editor Gary Cole chose the team.
"I was waiting to talk to some pro scouts . . . [and] look at some of the grades they had on centers to see if that jibed with what people were telling me and what I was seeing on the college level," Cole said of his Pyne pick. "And it all jibes."
The issue comes out Aug. 7.
Pyne was a second-team all-Big East selection last year as a junior, behind West Virginia's Mike Compton. Compton was last year's Playboy All-America center.
