WRIST INJURY CUTS STRANGE'S PLAY SHORT

Curtis Strange ended a short and painful stay at the Masters by withdrawing halfway through the second round Friday.

Strange hurt his left wrist nine days ago on the practice range at Kingsmill, his home course in Williamsburg, Va. He has been diagnosed with tenosynovitis - a fancy term for severe inflammation in the casing surrounding his tendons.

Strange consulted with famed physician Frank Jobe earlier this week and Augusta orthopedist Howard Hudson after withdrawing Friday. Both prescribed rest and ice on the wrist.

Strange said he would skip next week's Heritage Classic in Hilton Head, S.C., but planned to return to the tour the next week at Greensboro, N.C.

Strange struggled through Thursday's opening round in 5-over-par 77. After awaking in great discomfort Friday, he informed playing partner Wayne Grady and Augusta National officials that he likely wouldn't be able to complete the second round.

Their twosome was assigned a marker, who replaced Strange when the 38-year-old Virginian pulled out after hitting his tee shot on No. 8. Strange was at even-par for the day, having made a birdie at No. 1 despite being able to drive the ball a mere 200 yards.

"I could feel this coming for eight days and if it had been any other tournament, I probably wouldn't even have come, " Strange said. "But I wanted to give this a try."
