HENSLEY BEHIND THE WHEEL

Jimmy Hensley will drive the late Alan Kulwicki's car in at least the next two Winston Cup races.

Hensley, of Horsepasture, said Winston Cup team owner Felix Sabates asked him to drive Kulwicki's car in races at North Wilkesboro, N.C., and Martinsville.

"After that, he's not sure what the situation is going to be," Hensley said Thursday in the Martinsville Bulletin.

Sabates is the executor of Kulwicki's estate. Kulwicki, the defending Winston Cup champion, was killed along with three associates in a plane crash April 1.

Sabates said he would like to sell Kulwicki's race team within the next four weeks. He said he had "11 real qualified buyers" for the team. The new owner could bring in a driver, he said.

"I'm just going to do the very best I can for them as long as I can," Hensley said. "It all depends on who buys the team as to if I keep my job. That's kind of out of my hands."

Hensley, who took over for Rob Moroso after the young driver was killed in the fall of 1990, knows from experience that he will be the center of attention when he arrives at North Wilkesboro on Friday.

"I'm sure I'll be under a magnifying glass, but I'll handle it somehow," he said.
