NORTH CROSS PLAYER, COACH EARN HONORS

North Cross' Jim Muscaro has been voted boys' basketball coach of the year by the Virginia Independent Schools, and the Raiders' Marcus Cardwell has received a spot on the all-state basketball team.

Muscaro was chosen coach of the year after his team rolled to the VIS state championship - its second - last month. The Raiders also won the Virginia Independent Conference title and had a 27-6 record.

Cardwell, a junior, led North Cross in scoring with a 15.9 average; he was the Raiders' playmaker.

The player of the year is Blue Ridge's Barry Harper, who is one of two repeat first-team performers. The other is Steve Quander of Flint Hill.

Cardwell; Holy Cross' Preston Snell, who played at Radford two years ago; and Trinity Episcopal's Mark Witthoefft moved up to the first team this year after being on the second team last year.

The other first-team players are Inus Norville of Hargrave Military, Ossie Jones of St. Stephen's, Brian Clark of Atlantic Shores and Jason Porter and Tommy Rueger of Norfolk Academy.

North Cross' Mike Bryan was a member of the second team. The 6-foot-6 center led the Raiders' inside game.
