COLLEGES-HOKIES RALLY, BEAT CATAMOUNTS 8-5
Virginia Tech trailed 5-0 after two innings but rallied to defeat Western Carolina 8-5 in non-conference baseball in Blacksburg.Freshman David Fitt helped the Hokies with a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Shortstop Dee Dalton also scored in the fifth off a sacrifice fly by Bo Durkac to make it 5-4.
Tech scored three runs in the seventh inning to take the lead. J.R. Hawkins and Durkac singled to get on base, and Ken Nonamaker and Josh Herman each had RBI singles.
Junior Bryce Gammon (1-0) came on in the third inning and earned the win for the Hokies (19-4). He pitched six innings, allowing two hits while striking out six. Redshirt freshman Sean Hummel pitched the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.
The Catamounts' record is 19-16.
Ferrum jumped on Greensboro College for four runs in the second inning and defeated the Hornets 6-0 in a Dixie Conference baseball game. The key hit in the big inning was Chad Maddox's bases-loaded double, which brought in three runs. The Panthers finished with 12 hits; Greensboro (9-11) had four. Sophomore right-hander Keith Mayhew (6-0) pitched all nine innings, striking out nine and walking one. Senior first baseman Jerold Smith hit his eighth homer of season in the fifth; he is Ferrum's all-time home run leader with 34 in his career. Ferrum (14-3, 6-1) plays Greensboro again today at noon for a doubleheader.
Radford had 16 hits, including four home runs, as the Highlanders defeated Charleston Southern 12-5 in Charleston, S.C. Radford led 5-1 after four innings after two-run home runs by Duane Filchner and John Gregg in the third and fourth innings, respectively. Dennis Van Pelt added two more homers to help put away the game for the Highlanders (13-9 overall, 3-5 Big South). Jay Hensley (3-1) struck out six, walked five and gave up two runs on eight hits in eight innings for Radford. Charleston Southern is 15-12 and 5-7.
The Virginia Tech women's tennis team won four singles matches and all of the doubles matches in defeating UNC Greensboro 7-2 in Blacksburg. Virginia Tech led 4-2 after Shannon Cubitt, Jen Dinello, Julie Jackson and Emma Whiteree won singles matches. In doubles, Cubitt and Jackson and Dinello and Cathy Dixon sealed the team victory by winning 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-2, respectively. The Hokies (11-7) will conclude their regular season today at Howard.
Twelve Virginia colleges, including two-time defending champion Christopher Newport, begin play today in the Division II-III Intercollegiate State Golf Tournament at The Homestead in Hot Springs. The 36-hole tournament will conclude Sunday on the resort's par-72 Lower Cascades course. Christopher Newport earned a 15-shot victory over Roanoke College last year.
