FRANKLIN COUNTY EDGES FLEMING 1-0 IN BASEBALL

Frank Bowles bested Greg Duncan in a pitching duel and Nicky Coleman's solo homer supplied the only run as Franklin County nipped host William Fleming 1-0 in a Roanoke Valley District baseball game Friday.

Bowles permitted five hits and struck out 10 for the Eagles (3-0 overall, 1-0 league). Duncan also allowed five hits and struck out five.

Al Holland Jr. and Brian Dillard each collected two hits for Fleming (0-2, 0-1).

In other baseball:

At Glenvar, William Byrd (4-0) took advantage of wildness by the Glenvar pitching staff to score a 10-4 win. Six of the 10 Terriers who scored reached on walks. Glenvar is 0-2-1.

At Cave Spring, Will Goodman was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI as the Knights (3-2, 1-0) romped past Pulaski County 7-2 in a Roanoke Valley District game.

At Salem, Tracy Butt pitched a two-hitter, leading the Spartans past Christiansburg 8-1 in a non-district game. Charlie Hammersley was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in for Salem (3-2), and Kevin Feazell had a two-run triple.

\ SOFTBALL: Ashley McCallum was 3-for-4, including a game-winning single with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, as William Byrd defeated visiting Glenvar 8-7 in a non-district game. Wendy Hayden was 3-for-5 for Byrd (3-0).

Joy Maricini's triple was the big blow in Cave Spring's 8-4 non-district win over visiting E.C. Glass.

\ BOYS' TRACK: In Lynchburg, Tiki Barber placed first in four events to help Cave Spring defeat Heritage 76-56. Barber won the long jump (21 feet, 5 inches), triple jump (45-6), 100-meter dash (11.08 seconds) and the 200-meter dash.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: Cave Spring and Heritage tied with 61 points and Brookville was third with 45 points at a tri-meet in Lynchburg. Some Knights winners were Lehann Agee in the 400 meters, Emily Rakes in the high jump, Erin Layne in the 3,200 meters and Molly Rutherford in the 800 meters.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Martin Szumanski and Bobby Warnick scored two goals apiece, sparking Cave Spring (2-0) to a 5-0 win over William Fleming.
