KINSTON OUTDUELS BUCCANEERS 3-1
Outfielder John Cotton scored two runs Friday night as the Kinston Indians defeated the Salem Buccaneers 3-1 in a Carolina League baseball game at Granger Stadium.Salem took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when outfielder Don Garvey drew a walk, stole second and scored on a two-out double by Chance Sanford.
Kinston scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. Cotton doubled off the right-field wall and Pete Rose Jr. blooped a single to center field to put runners on first and third. Outfielder Marc Marini hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Cotton, and Rod McCall hit another sacrifice fly to drive in Rose and give the Indians a 2-1 lead.
Cotton scored again in the seventh inning when he walked, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rose and made it home on Salem shortstop Tony Womack's error.
Left-hander Kevin Logsdon was the winning pitcher for Kinston. He allowed six hits and one run in six innings, struck out five and walked two. Greg McCarthy struck out three of the four batters he faced in the ninth inning to record his first save.
The Bucs' Doug Konuszewski pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and two runs, one earned, striking out two and walking one.
