GAS SPILL BLAMED ON VANDALS
Virginia Department of Transportation officials said Saturday they believe vandals are responsible for a gasoline spill of more than 3,600 gallons at a regional headquarters.About 46 gallons of diesel fuel also were involved in the spill, said Mike Henry, maintenance operations manager at the Fancy Hill-area headquarters, which is just outside Lexington near Interstate 81.
Henry said a nearby resident smelled fumes Saturday morning and called Virginia State Police, who found nozzles for gasoline and diesel fuel pumps lying on the ground.
The spill had been mostly contained by the afternoon, and crews were finishing up the cleanup, he said.
