GRISSOM OVERTAKES GN FIELD TO WIN

Steve Grissom came from far back in the starting field to win the Mountain Dew 300 Grand National race Saturday.

Grissom, from Gadsden, Ala., started his Oldsmobile 24th in the 30-car field at Hickory Motor Speedway, but patiently worked his way forward through the 300-lap event. He took the lead on lap 250 and led the rest of the way.

The race was slowed by 15 caution flags for 82 laps. Although there were several crashes, no injuries were reported at the .363-mile track.

Winston Cup regular Ernie Irvan, who won the pole and led twice for 89 laps, was a victim of one of the crashes. A broken suspension part sent him into the first-turn wall on lap 136.

Ricky Craven of Newburgh, Maine, finished second in a Chevrolet, .13 of a second behind Grissom. Craven led twice for 67 laps.

Joe Nemechek of Lakeland, Fla., was third in a Chevrolet, with Tommy Houston of Hickory, N.C., fourth in a Ford. Todd Bodine of Chemung, N.Y., was fifth in a Chevrolet.

Series point leader David Green of Owensboro, Ky., finished sixth and maintained his perfect record of completing every lap through the first six races of the year. He emerged from the race with a 31-point edge over Grissom.

Dale Jarrett, winner of the Daytona 500 earlier this year, left the race early with a blown engine but received a $25,000 bonus from the speedway for qualifying for the race.
