SIGMON STARTS SEASON RIGHT

In last year's 27-race season at Franklin County Speedway, Rocky Mount's Rick Sigmon consistently was a strong finisher in the Late Model Stock Car division.

He placed second in several races, and finished second in the points race, two points out of first.

But he never won a race.

Saturday night he put the Avis label to rest permanently. He overtook leader Tony McGuire three laps from the checkered flag in the 100-lap Late Model feature of the Charlotte Invitational 300, the 1993 season-opener at FCS.

"Not winning a single race last year gnawed at me all winter long," Sigmon said. "We decided to come out smokin' in '93. And it helped that Lady Luck was with me tonight."

McGuire, a seven-time winner in '92, took the lead from Sigmon on lap 77 and appeared to have the race in hand until he developed engine problems. He finished seventh.

Rustburg's Dudley Lawhorn finished second Saturday night, and Rodney "Six-Pack" Cundiff of Boones Mill was third.

In the 25-lap Mini Stock opener, polesitter Steve Lam coasted to an easy win. Tommy Dean, last year's points champion, overtook Wayne Corprew for second. Corprew finished third.

Vinton's Phillip VanDerVeer passed early leader Freddie Goff midway through the 25-lap Street Stock event for a convincing victory. Goff finished second and Lonnie Foley rallied to place third.

Floyd's Leon Moles survived a flurry of caution flags to win the Pure Stock competition. Last year's points champion Mike Owens started at the rear of the 10-car field, but finished second. Red Hartman placed third.

A full field of 19 cars crowded the Rookie race, but Gordon Wingfield managed to weave his way to victory. Mike Hall was second and Neil Amos third.

Dean Sutphin won the Any Car finale. Jimmy Floyd was second and Danny Brunk was third.
